Before beginning our discussion, let us first understand earthly love. As human beings, we all desire truthful companionship throughout our life's journey. From childhood to old age, we experience companionship in the form of parents, friends, a spouse, and children. Till death, we long for "that one" in our lives. All of this is bound together by the term "love."
But the question remains:
- What is true love?
- What are the characteristics of true love?
- Are we chosen by God because of love?
Have we ever encountered these questions in our lives?
Let's Explore Together
Matthew 22:37-39
"Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself. All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments."
Here, the Lord teaches us to love God with all our heart, soul, and mind. Secondly, He emphasizes loving our neighbors. God states that all commandments are fulfilled through love. Let us reflect on the importance of love and its true characteristics as defined in the Bible.
1 Corinthians 13:1-7
"If I speak in the tongues of men or angels but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and knowledge, and if I have faith that can move mountains but do not have love, I am nothing. If I give all I possess to the poor and give my body to hardship that I may boast but do not have love, I gain nothing.
Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails."
These verses outline the true characteristics of love as explained by Jesus in the Bible. We are encouraged to apply these traits in our daily lives and situations, even when faced with challenges.
Practical Examples
Example 1: Patience and Forgiveness
If someone angers or frustrates you, remember the commandment to "love your neighbor." One characteristic of love is patience. Instead of responding with anger, showing patience is an act of true love. By doing so, you align yourself with God’s teachings and fulfill the second commandment of Jesus.
Example 2: Love in Marriage
In every marriage, flaws exist on both sides. Love teaches us not to keep a record of wrongs (1 Corinthians 13:6). Forgiving each other's shortcomings can prevent misunderstandings and divorces. Furthermore, love is not self-seeking. In marriage, expecting nothing in return helps avoid possessiveness and conflicts.
Each characteristic of love has its unique essence, and applying them appropriately to situations is key to a harmonious life.
God’s Love for Us
Isaiah 43:4
"Since you are precious and honored in my sight, and because I love you, I will give people in exchange for you, nations in exchange for your life."
Isaiah 54:10
"Though the mountains be shaken and the hills be removed, yet my unfailing love for you will not be shaken."
God’s faithful love is unwavering. As stated in 1 Corinthians 13:8, "Love never fails."
Isaiah 43:25
"I, even I, am He who blots out your transgressions for My own sake, and will not remember your sins anymore."
Here, God demonstrates forgiveness, a key characteristic of love as outlined in 1 Corinthians 13:4. Love keeps no record of wrongs.
A Final Thought
My dear one, apply these principles of love in your life, and you will surely witness a transformation. True love, as taught by God, brings peace, joy, and fulfillment to all aspects of life.
