Why Resurrection Sunday Beats Easter
In our Faith walk, celebrating Jesus’ resurrection is a big deal—it’s the heart of what we believe! But did you know the Bible never calls this day “Easter”? Through Biblical Studies, we can see why “Resurrection Sunday” is the name that truly honors scripture and deepens our Faith. Let’s explore what the Bible says, where “Easter” came from, and how we can celebrate with truth.
The Bible Points to Resurrection Sunday
Our Faith rests on scripture, and the Bible is clear about when Jesus rose. Matthew 28:1 says, “At dawn on the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to look at the tomb.” Mark 16:2 and John 20:1 say the same. These verses call it the “first day of the week,” not “Easter.”
In Biblical Studies, we dig into the original words. The King James Bible uses “Easter” in Acts 12:4, but this is a mistake. The Greek word Pascha means “Passover,” a Jewish festival. Modern Bibles, like the NIV, correct it to “Passover.” This shows our Faith should focus on what scripture actually says—Resurrection Sunday, not Easter.
Where Did “Easter” Come From?
Biblical Studies also looks at history. The word “Easter” isn’t in the Bible’s original Greek or Hebrew. A monk named Bede, writing in the 8th century, said “Easter” might come from Eostre, a goddess of spring. This was long after Jesus’ time! Early Christians called the resurrection Pascha, linking it to Passover. Using “Easter” can mix in non-biblical ideas, like eggs and bunnies, which don’t grow our Faith.
Jesus and the Passover Promise
Our Faith shines when we see Jesus as the “Passover lamb.” In 1 Corinthians 5:7, it says, “For Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed.” Biblical Studies shows Jesus died and rose during Passover (John 19:14), fulfilling God’s plan. Calling it Resurrection Sunday keeps our Faith tied to this powerful truth, not a later name like Easter.
A Name That Strengthens Faith
In Biblical Studies, we honor scripture by using its terms. Mark 16:6 says, “He is risen!” Resurrection Sunday captures this joy and keeps our Faith focused on Jesus’ victory over death. It skips cultural extras and points straight to the Bible.
Live Your Faith with Truth
Let’s share this Faith and Biblical Studies lesson! Tell others: “The Bible calls it the ‘first day of the week,’ not Easter. Let’s use Resurrection Sunday to honor scripture!” Show them Matthew 28:1 or 1 Corinthians 5:7. By choosing Resurrection Sunday, we strengthen our Faith and stand on God’s word.
Celebrate with a name that lifts your Faith and grounds you in Biblical Studies. Resurrection Sunday is all about Jesus—let’s keep it that way!
